Monster Meteor fly by

Here's a 1 minute video I just finished.

Watch as young Alex climbs his house to see a meteor that has just entered the atmosphere. Will he survive?!! Watch and see.

I saw a meteor (6.8 meg)

I did the effects using fluid simulations.

real nice work man.
i feel the the smoke from behind as the meteor comes toward u is a little too solid. as it passes it seems to look alot better. as it comes toward it looks kinda like a mass of grey maybe it needs to be more tranparent. same with the fireball.

Hey great effort. Its looks great as it flys by. Something i noticed was that the explosion looks quite pixelated towards the end.
I love the way the clip ended with the writing as smoke.

There's nothing normal about normals. In FACT i think the are abnormal.

The meteor was my first project with fluids.

It took me 3 weeks but most of that was just figuring out how the system works.

Yeah, there is some blockiness to the explosions and even the head of the meteor itself. I had the resolution of the fluid container set as high as I could without choking my computer. I think the problem was that the fluid emitters moved so far between frames that they ended up completely filling the voxels rather than letting the fluid fill them gradually. I need to find a way to sample the simulation more times per frame. Anyone know how to do that???

The shockwave was a nurbs curve that emitted fluid as it grew (scaled up).

The smoke at the end was painted into the container. I then used a radial field to get the black smoke to dance.

The whole thing was composited in After Effects. I painted the matte for the trees using Photoshop then imported it into After Effects and used the 2D tracker to get it to stay with the hand held camera movement.

Again, if anyone knows how to sub-sample the simulation so that I don't get the blockiness in fast moving emitters then I'd be grateful if you could tell me. The container for the meteor was 40 x 40 x 350 with a resoluton of 160 X 160 x 1400
