Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

cheers some guy - yeah, I have a basic idea for a short animation - though nothing is set in stone - just something to help me learn the technique. Originally the boots were going to be some sort of gravity shoes, hence their size. user added image

Here's another small update.... I remade the bit going around his neck, and also added some quick straps and belt.

As T1ck pointed out early on, he is looking a little unbalanced - I am hoping to pose him leaning forward, though I may have to redesign the vacuum.

At the moment he is just under 6000 polygons, though there is probably some unnecessary geometry in the vacuum - especially the sphere - and I haven't really deleted any hidden faces such as his feet and hands.

any comments / crits ? user added image

it looks real cool but it could do with a lot of optimizition- but you already said u will so its just cool. user added image

Thanks MattTheMan.user added image When you say 'optimization' you're referring to getting rid of unnecessary geometry, right?

thats what I meant... too much reading on optimization of raytracers/photon mappers... lol! :p

nice work arran, its coming on really well - and true to the concept too user added image

I think you'll gain a heck of a lot of tris back from simplifying the sphere geometry. Also if he's not talking or a major character then you could probably save some on the face too.

Are you going to rig and animate him as he'd look cool running around user added image

Thanks for the comments masteryoda and T1ck.user added image

Yeah, I am planning on using him for a small animation with the cat creature that I posted in the 2d thread. I still have a lot to learn though so it may take a while!

I have spent the last couple of days adding a bit more detail on his belt, his gloves, making the vacuum suction pipe thingy (?) and optimizing the geometry, getting rid of any hidden faces and stuff like that.

At the moment his polycount stands at 4246 faces with all of his accessories, which I don't think is too bad, though what do I know? user added image

My main problem right now is building the vacuum hose which will go from one red circle to the other. I just don't know how to build it and how to animate it so that it hangs realistically, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. user added image

I think I am going to start texturing him next as I imagine I can come back to that problem later.

Haven't had too much time to work on this recently. I started doing a bit of texturing, but he looks like he is dressed in his pajamas!

so I decided to go back and do a bit of remodelling to make his clothes hang a bit better.
