Particle effect not showing up in Render

Ok, I have a huge problem that I don't know how to fix. Whenever I render a particle effect, it completely doesn't show up! What the heck!
I seem to have tryed everything, but maybe this has happened to other people? Please, some advice!

ooop, never mind. I think it might have had something to do with the <cloudy> setting I had on for the shape? lol, well, I can see it now that I've changed it. Weird.

Some particle effects can only be rendered using the hardware renderer, the ones with software next to them in the drop down selection box, can be rendered using the maya software renderer
