Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character
I started out in XSI 4, then made the switch to Maya. Both have their good points and bad points. I found XSI character rigging easier, but maya is easier to model in. XSI comes with Syflex, but Maya nCloth is far superior. XSI has the ability to render within the presp view, Maya does not.
I would recommend maya, but its choice you can make. Both have free version for you to trail. Maya seems to have more support online than XSI, but they do have free tutes in the help files.
So I would say get the free versions of each and have a play through the tutorials.
Enjoy 3D

I tried XSI and thought it was very powerful. Then, I saw what Maya could do, and it looked easier to model. (I stink at that! I can think of wicked awesome 3D toons in my head, and wanna bring em to life!)
