Polygon modeling and image planes?

is everything like creatures and poeple modeled with an image plan e? is there a good way to model a head or like a monster without a image plane?

There are artists out there who have the talent and skill to model every thing from external reference images and don't use image planes.

As a rule though, always use them. Never try it alone user added image

Depends on what you're trying to do, but it's always better to work from a picture reference(image plane).

When you're getting a job, the guy hiring you would probably want to know if you can model from a picture reference because you're not the one that will be doing the designing.
