Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

I think he wants to know how to make wires on some objects darker than on others. While I don't know how to do that, you can put objects in layers and color-code them.

Or possibly he's asking about normals. In which case it would be the Soften/Harden command.

location varies by version;
Polygons -> Normals -> Soften/Harden (or something like that) for earlier versions of maya
Normals -> Soften Edge or Normals -> Harden Edge for 8.5 (and possibly 2008)

lol i was just identifying what he circled... i know you had it in your pic of the preferences menu, but it was kinda small and hard to read so i was clarifying.

for mischaw0, a border edge appears when there's an edge of a polygon that isn't attached to another polygon. it's thicker so you can see where they are on your model so you can identify holes and unmerged edges.
