Dilemma!

Elephants eyes are (at least the visible bit) black
so do i make the eyes black or more like eyes of other animals

the thing is alot of expression can be given from the eyes and if their completely black it might make some things more difficult....

I'd say that all depends on what you are trying to do with this fine elephant. If you are going cartoony, think the likes of Dumbo user added image

I don't know what you plan to use this for or what look you are trying to achieve. But who says your elephant has to look like a real elephant? You could make it a cross breed, but if you are trying to convey emotion with it, why not make the eyes bigger, and give it white eyes with a black pupil or something. Big eyes allow for a larger range of motion and more visible motion.

If you are going cartoony think about the end look you want. If you want expressions you may want to exaggerate things such as the mouth, trunk, eyes, and ears.

Im not sure what i want anymore, its tempting to try and make it realistic

and where did you get that dumbo picture? that shot isnt in the movie, in fact dumbo never wears a hot like that.....

Just go back to basics and figure out what you want to do, do you want the project to be a cartoon or realistic?

I feel you might need to go back to the drawing board so to speak and gather reference for that.

how do you think i should do this bit (see picture)
the ridges arent as pronounced on babys as adults, so i might use a bump map

Definitely model those wrinkles, get your anatomy bang on, find some bone structures / muscle group information.

Its just if you look at some of my baby elephant refs their really quite small compared to other parts of the body
(and i dont have the slightest idea of how to model them.....)
