Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Yes I am
Looking back at it I am definitely going to start texturing from scratch.
Do you think I should add hair to him (probably using maya fur) or do you think it would add too much to render times (considering I will be animating with him)?

I'd say it'd be great if you could add a little hair to him, they have those tiny little hairs all over them don't they?
It would add to the render times a little but if you don't really have a time limit on it, then I'd say spend the time and do it the best you can.
Looks great so far!

Thanks, I think I will give the hairs a go then
I've toned the variation down a bit and I'm wondering if it's too much

I think I'm done with the general colour variation so I'm going to add the hair and then see what it looks like and see if I want to add sand/dirt/mud.

I've had a go with SSS, I like the added quality but it's far too shiny, how can I make it less so. I tried turning down shininess but it didn't really work

Have you created a lighting set up? Probably would help as I cant see much SSS.

What SSS are you using? I prefer the fast skin, but I think theres a spec weight that helps that out in both.

Mainly I use the mix 20 to blend the SSS with a blin for spec and reflectivity.

I don't have a proper lighting set up and also I turned the weight down quite a lot.
I'm not sure if I should use SSS since an elephants skin is so thick but Ill keep tinkering (What colours do you think I should use for it?)
I was following this (https://www.creativecrash.com/tutoria...der/page3#tabs) tutorial to set it up initially that used the Misss_fast_simple_maya

Here's what I have with some lights and weights on 1.0

Here it is with a little less drastic settings

I do like the softer look, but it seems to wash out my texture a bit and I think it makes it look less realistic.

Here it is without CSS for comparison:

Hi elephantinc

I think sss is like you said not for a elephant also bump up your bump map and the darker colours on your texture map. Start thinking about things like mud on his legs dry or wet or both.........dave

While I try to decide what to do with the elephant texturing I started on something to rival the phanteaters

After today I won't be able to work on either of them for a few weeks due to exams

did you make up that weapon by yourself?

looks awesome! more importantly the bevel tool never broke for you?
i hate that tool and all its annoyingness..

is the weapon some sort of back mounted plasma gun?

that's a "Ch" pronounced as a "K"
