mirrored selections

When I choose face, vertex, or edge, and then select the relevant component, the opposite side is also selected, in a mirror fashion. How do I turn this off so that when I select one face of a cube, the opposite face does not also get selected?

Double click on the move icon on the left hand side that should bring up the option panel on the right hand side, scroll down to to reflection setting and untick reflections.............dave
