Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Power Plant From Challenge

I was just watching a video on Youtube and got an idea of what to do with this scene. I'm going to finish up building the plant, and then destroy it.

Here's the video I was watching.

YouTube - ‪Large Scale Smoke 6‬‏

What I was thinking to do was build it up to look more like a coal plant or something, for an excuse to have smoke stacks, and then destroy bits and pieces of it. After that I think Ill take it into RealFlow and give it some smoke, fire, and maybe a flood or two from a nearby lake or something. Just make it look like a huge explosion happened, basically.

Still haven't gotten my main PC back yet, so for now I'll just post pictures of the scene so far from the challenge thread, and start screwing with RealFlow and see if I can get a decent smoke effect.

It will probably only end as a few still images in the end, but I'll be going for a realistic photographers point of view and Photoshop effects and such to match.

Anyways, here are the images so far.

Looks like a good idea any reason why you are using realflow (only seen it used for water)..........dave

I'm thinking RealFlow because I have absolutely no experience with Maya particles/fluids, and I do have a tiny bit with RealFlow. That and I want more realistic spread/scattering of the particles, which RF seems better for. Once I figure out how to actually install RF on bloody ubuntu and try it out I may change my mind though user added image

Been playing a bit with Maya fluids smoke, almost have the results I want, just need to tweak it a fair bit now that I've figured out what things do.

Having a problem though, it gets super laggy when I playback/simulate/whateveryouwannacallit. Dunno if it's my specs, or what. Ideas?

Specs:

2.8 Ghz Pentium Dual Core
4 Gigs DDR2 @800Mhz
EVGA GTS 250

Running Vista Ultimate and Maya 2008

Looks the part though yeh tweak it a lot....is it smoke dude? as most powerplants emit steam....not smoke...I could be wrong. My laptop has good grunt but lags a lot with dynamics etc too man...might just be the way it is I suppose when you use things like that. I usually have to turn everything off to get it to run smoother...I THINK you can make the smoke/steam follow a curve too man...give some wind etc...I like the model man...buildings etc are great. If I EVER finish my vehi-feng I will send it to you LOL then you can merge the 2...kidding..

cheers bullet

I just stuck it in there to fit the scene as it is at the moment, in the end there will be random plumes of smoke all over the place :p

I'm probably gonna try to figure out dynamic wind and such for better realism. Don't like curves too much user added image
