Manually "Boolean Union"

I am looking to combine two objects into the one shell, since the Boolean operations in Maya are not always trustworthy, often I end up with no model at all, I am wondering if there is a good way to cut a face where it intersects with another face?, i.e. where the vertices of two objects do not intersect and two faces pass through each other, I cannot 'snap' to anything to make the cut precise, I can only do it by eye and I do not want to inadvertently deform either shape.

Any pointers?

what about edge loops....you will still have to position them by eye...that way you will be able to delete the face...then delete the un needed edge loop after? or split poly tool...apologies if I have it incorrect
