Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Vulture Squadron

Hi
Following on from my Army Surplus Special (which I still need to correct using the new track tutorial! Thanks for that - a great help!) I've gone for another cartoon classic - Vulture Squadron from Catch the Pigeon. Dick Dastardly and crew take to the air.

I really love the shape and "style" of these machines and I think they translate quite well into 3D. As before, I am trying to keep as close to the 2D cartoon reference as possible, but a few things naturally have changed.
Most of the modelling is done, I think, and I have started to UV them. I am not sure yet how I want to texture them. I either go for the cartoon look with flat solid colours or more realistic, e.g. old WW1 biplanes with canvas texture, etc. I think the latter could look cool but I don't think my texturing skills are up to the job yet.

Anyway just thought I would share these with you guys for any comments, thoughts or criticisms. I will post more as I go.
Cheers
Steve

I have attached the reference image I have been working from.

These translate fantastically into 3D, they are awesome. Please don't go the toon-shade,
make them more toward real textures but still using the cartoon colors. I never really appreciated the great design that went into some of those cartoon shows.

Very nice models - well done - but you got the name of the show wrong - its "Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines" - Catch the Pigeon was the name of the song

Hey those are very nice. I remember that series way back when I was a young'un. Yes I too look forward to seeing them all done. Very good work.

I agree they translate from 2D to 3D very well.

Thanks guys, all you great comments really encourage me to continue, and thanks tweetytunes for putting straight on the name of the show... my memory ain't what it use to be... user added image

Just a quick render of how I thought I may do the 'cartoon flat colour' texture. djwaterman I did not think about the toon shader. I still need to work on it a bit e.g. adding a few lines between the panels etc. I do like the effect but I may try a more realistic just to see.

look forward to hearing what you think.

Cheers
Steve

Another one almost done. Dick Dastardly's this time.

Dave: I tried the baking route( from a tutorial I've found), The colour was ok, but the Occlution… every time i tried it kept crashing. I don't know if its the model, Maya or my machine? So I've just done rendered a colour and an AO image and combined them in Photoshop.
Any thoughts or suggestion as always greatly received.

Cheers Steve

oh and i may have to change the red and orange colours... YUCK!
