Portal light drastically increasing render time

Interiors and Furniture, Part 2. When I add a area light portal, my render times more than double. Render time for the one scene was already pretty bad at 14 minutes. Once I added 3 portal lights and clicked render, many seasons passed and years drifted away. It was awful. So I deleted two of the portals and tried with just one.

0 portals; 13 minutes
1 portal; 31 minutes

Are portal lights really meant to tack on such a huge amount of rendering time? It doesn't do it for David's time in the tutorial. I don't really understand why my render times are so high in the first place.
