VFX studio Animal Logic has released USD ALab, a production scene in retro-style of a mad scientist lab. The scene is free to download and follows Animal Logic’s USD production workflow. The studio hopes that by releasing the scene, they will encourage education and training by studios, vendors, and students.
Animal Logic was a pioneer in USD-based workflows in VFX production and began the transition to a USD pipeline during their work on Peter Rabbit in 2017. The studio open-sourced its USD plugin AL_USDMaya, which later became Maya’s new USD plugin in the 2022 release of the software.
The USD ALab scene is released under the Academy Software Foundation’s new license, which permits non-commercial use with attribution. It can be loaded into any application that can import USD files, including Maya.
