Unity, the leading platform for creating and operating real-time 3D content, has announced an agreement to buy Weta Digital’s proprietary tools, pipeline, in-house asset library, and engineering team for $1.625 billion. The deal aims to put Weta Digital’s sophisticated VFX tools in the hands of millions of 3D content creators.

Weta’s Academy Award-winning VFX teams will continue to exist as a stand-alone entity under the name WetaFX, which will remain under majority ownership by Sir Peter Jackson.
