I've applied a checkerboard,after UV Layout, to the tabletop and the thickness but now I have an issue on the edge. The CHeckerboard is some how distorted on that edge.
Get into the shape tab of the object's attributes, under "Smooth Mesh" expand the "extra controls" section and for map borders choose "smooth all". By default the edges of the UV shells remain hard even though everything else is smoothed, hence the warping texture.
