Problem with tools (scale, rotate, etc)

In Maya (I have version 6.5) all of the tools (scale, move, rotate) are very large compared to the object I am editing. I have to rotate the camera to see the squares of the scale tool in order to scale it a certain direction and I can't see the circles of the rotate tool at all. Is there anyway to fix this?
