layer overrides

Hi,

If I create a new render layer, and set its attributes to say, 'shadow' - it works correctly (ie. only shadows). But only after I flip the renderer back to mental ray - for some reason it sets a render override to 'maya software'

Is this correct, and if so, why? I would've thought maya software would be the last renderer to choose for raytraced shadows..?
