Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

GlowShader question

Dear People,

I am trying to create a planet with a thin layer of atmosphere on the horizon of the planet, and only on the part that is illuminated.

I have tried various approaches, the most obvious one using Special Effects/Glow Intensity, and although I have succeeded in reproducing something close to what I want, it would be difficult to animate the scene the way i have set it up.

I was wondering whether any of you have some ideas to offer me.

Thanks

Hanuman

Create another shell on the outside, and parent the 2, and put a glow shader on the outer shell - should work fine user added image

Yes, I did that first actually (following a tutorial from the Gnomon Workshop DVDs) but the problem with that is that the glow appears all around the sphere, even when there is a dark area to the sphere. And I want the glow to appear only at the horizon.

I tried adjusting the Threshold attribute of the ShaderGlow node, but that was not very satisfactory.

If it helps I can post a low res figure of what i am trying to achieve, as i am afraid that i am not being very clear?

thanks

to make glow appear appear at spots within camera angle range
in the glow brightness or threshold (not sure)
connect it to a sampler node. this should reduce glow in areas dark and increase in areas bright...

a nother simple way to do this would be to use a ramp with a sampler info node set to faceing raito. or if you have maya 5 use the ramp shader.
