bump maps

What's the best way to make bump maps if you already have a texture file for your shader?

You can just plug the texture file into the bump channel on the material you're using. You may want to convert the texture to a grayscale image just to see what you're gonna get as a bump map but I don't think its necessary.

Many times I just use the texture map as the bump. If your using many high res. images for bump maps (ex: 3000x3000) converting them to grayscale is a good way to save some space.
