Paint Effects animated stroke

I have a brush stroke that is animated to start from nothing and then to reveal the whole stroke in 3D space (kind of like an long extrusion on a path.). However the animation is not smooth. It kind of chugs in increments.
Any thoughts as to why that is? Also, the aliasing is pretty bad?
