Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Polygon - Project a curve ?

I am working with Polygons. I have a cube(room) and an open ended rectangle(hallway). I want to join the two. I want to create a hole in the cube that fits the hall perfectly.

Is there a way I can project(etch) the edges of the rectangle onto the cube so all the vertices line up? Then I could just delete the resultant face from the cube and have a hallway leading into a room? Maybe booleans is my only option?

i don't know if booleans work cause can't imagine it right now, but its a possibility.

your second option with polys is you have to model it till it fits and then merge verts or sth like that.

I think I might have it ! I have no Maya here to test though ...

1. Append to rectangle polygon ( fill in the door )
2. Copy/paste that face
3. Extrude that face into a rectangle.
3. Boolean the hole into the face of the cube(room)

* vertices will line up
* no booleans were done against complex geometry
