Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

"Learning Maya" help!

Hi all,

I'm following along with the "Learning Maya 2" book (PDF) with Maya 4. However, I'm now working with NURBS and the interface seems to have changed quite a bit...especially the layer bar. I'm stuck on "Creating the Top Surface" of Lesson 7 on page 136.

I'm trying to create the top surface of a NURBS box by adding two different layers and adding the base surface to one layer and selecting the top edge isoparm and then duplicating it using "Edit Curves" -> "Duplicate Surface Curves".
When I try and add this selection to the other layer I get: -

Error: Only DAG objects can be in a display layer. 'curveFromSurfaceIso1' ignored.

Yet in the book, it seems to work fine. Any ideas?

Jon.

I'm using Maya 4 PLE and as far as I know, the book "Learning Maya 2/4" is not included in either Maya 4 Full or PLE. *Instant* Maya is, but thats not what I'm using.
I'd like to follow along with the "Learning Maya" tutorials as they seem easier to me and you don't need any other files, but I can't find any info on the differences between Maya 2 and 4 which might help solve my prob. So, I'm just asking if anyone has the Maya 4 version of this tutorial book and could tell me how to do in Maya 4 what it says in the Maya 2 book.

If I was using pirated software, which was certainly your implication, I wouldn't have bothered asking, would I?

If I don't understand your meaning exactly, please excuse me.
Have you already had the Maya's help docment?
If not, I have.
I think perhaps I can send it to you.

I am trying to see it in Maya 4.5 - but I have a question - Could it be that the selection you have includes both the duplicated curve AND the Isoparm ?

Did you try slecting only the curve ?

YEP !

I made the same part and...

I was right - you have to re-select only the new curve and it will work just fine (It indeed had the isoparm selected)
