Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Please help (demo-reel)

Howdy,

As you may have noticed I have been a bit inactive in terms of creating something in 3D. This has been mostly because I haven't had the time or energy (and hence no motivation) because of my daytime job, which is not related to gfx in any way...

Anyway, my holidays are coming and I thought I'd use it for creating some kind of demo-reel. My problem is that I always start something too big and never really finish it. So the question is: What could I possibly do and preferably complete in four weeks. Ideas are welcome...

Thanks,

Kari

K-Man are you into character animation? Do you know how to rig and animate characters? If ya do then I would say invent a character and make him do a little dance, sing a tune walk along and fall over ect.

Make the clip about 10-20 seconds long and you should be able to do it in 4 weeks - I should know I have done it! Its and excellent way to start learning animation, phonemes, gesticulation etc...

Have a look at my website and my Alf character to see what I have done - you might even like it! If I think of something else I'll let you know gotta go now work calling!

A demo should be focused on what exactly you want to do. Games? Film?

Also, you'd want to think about what exactly you'd want to do in your field... modeling/texturing, animation, dynamics, etc and focus on that.

My 2 cents.

Gazz: Thanks. In theory I do know how to rig and animate characters but like I said I've never actually finished a character animation. I'll keep your idea in mind though.

Mike: Good advise too. Here in Finland there are very few companies that I would even want to send my demo. I believe that these companies are very small and are doing whatever they can sell... My point is I can't specialise too much...

I know my heart is in effects and dynamics but at the same time I have the feeling that there is no niche for it here...

Dunno... Maybe I'll do a smaller animation of the Andrea Gail thingy than I originally was planning. Then if I have time I'll add some other stuff too in the reel...

Actually, now that I think about what I just said I think the best solution for me might be freelancing...

...bah... i'm not thinking clearly atm :/
