animating a charictor

soon i will be trying o animate a charictor with human like features (two arms two legs ex.)
and i have never done this before
i was thinking of makeing a quick stik figure and learning how to rig and animate it to kind of teach myself and i was wondering if that was a good idea.user added image

if you want to, you could also start out with some finished rigged characters, to see and to feel it, before you e.g. start out with the riggin process...
