light shining THROUGH object

Hello,

I have a globe of the world. There are 5 point lights with opticalFX (lens flare glow) on them that travel continually around the globe, visible in the foreground and not when behind the globe as you would expect. However when I render, the flare/glow from the lights shows completely through the globe (Nurbs sphere) as if it's completely transparent. I have been rendering all in one scene so it isn't compositing.

I'm stuck. Anyone know how to get around this?

Thanks in advance

Well, what I ended up doing was keframing it off when it was on the opposite side, but as you said, it IS annoying.
