How do I "deselect all" when there's no empty space?

Apologies for what is probably a FAQ, but how do I deselect everything when there is no empty space to click on? (e.g. in a busy interior scene, where anywhere you click selects something else).
I searched the online help for 'deselect', but nothing relevant was there.
(I'm really hoping I don't have to mess about with selection masks to do such a simple thing. :-) )

Thanks

Steve

It should work to just go to wireframe and click in the empty space that is between the edges.

Hope that helped you out.
