this is a really great feature in maya...
..........you can create instances of object and that instance is always identical to the original geometry, although each object can have a unique translation, scaling, and rotation factor applied to it. Therefore, individual instances can be picked as objects independent of one another.

like in some Special effects movies u have seen growing yields of grasses...
