importing

Can someone please tell me how to import jpeg, and gifs, into maya. when i try to import them nothing happens.

I usually just drag say a jpeg file from the windows-explorer onto the (!) hypershade (either onto the workspace or onto a material-shader)(drag with the LMB held down not the MMB).

If I just drag the jpeg file onto an object it does't work for me.

But you can also "import/load" files from the attribute editor.

Occasionally, jpg and gif files do not get recognized by Maya for some reason. I usually stick with tga... haven't had a problem so far.
