Offset Instead of Duplicate..

What is the difference if I offset or duplicate a curve or surface?? To my eyes it seems to be the same thing, in terms of what I can do with the resulting curve or surface....
Thanks a lot....

I don't have Maya in front of me at the moment (away on holiday still user added image), but if I recall correctly, offset will change the shape of the original object based on the distance in order to keep its overall distance, point to point, the same throughout, while duplicate won't.
