extrude face help

sometimes when I extrude a faces it doesnt show the monipulator tool. how can I fix this?

i dont think thats why...It sometimes does show it, but other times it doesnt. It does allow me to move things around so its probably not lag..

Make sure history is turned on. it's the scroll icon next to the render buttons.
