Cyrius. I think what you want to do is tern off the smoth proxy if you can and just duplicat the snake. you said you got just the cage to duplicat. well thats fine.. you can take the cage and have it smoth, or smoth proxy it also.
though maybe I don't fully understand.
will that fix your problem ?

for a basic smoke effect:

create a particle system and change the render type to clouds s/w. Click "Add Attributes for Current Render Type". Adjust the threshold to make your particles stick togther more. Adjust surface shading to determine how wispy you want your smoke. Then create a new particle cloud material and adjust it's colour to be an off grey (experiment with other nodes such as 3d Clouds to give a more realistic look) then apply this to your particles..... render. Very basic but the right idea.

Looks like a good concept.. you'v done good on modeling the things.. yeah the smoke needs work. I don't know about smoke my self. I'll have to learn during this challenge my self
