Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Organic/Character Modeling

Well I've been away for a little while, but I have been busy, I've decided to try my hand at organic modeling, as that is what fist got me into CG... The hope that one day I would be working for a big studios, making creatures for movies like Hellboy, and Van Helsing.

But anyway, enough banter!

I've been working a couple of character heads lately, as the head seems to be the toughest part of the character to model for me, and then will move on and practice other areas of the body, until I'm happy with my results.

So here what I have: (I know the ears need to be re-done)

Old Hero:

Orc:

ZBrush concept Sculpt:

I plan on fully developing this character. I would of added more detail to the sculpt, but the machine I was working on only has 512 RAM.

C&C welcome, Thanks!

yes those are really good, I'm jealous, I can't model a head for anything, I've tried about 10 times now with absolutely no success. Keep up the good work user added image

hey mayaniac - these look excellent - i especially like the middle one.

i like the way you've modeled the expression of the first guy. i'm wondering though if you would want a more neutral expression if he were to be rigged. i'm not sure myself though.

really nice work! user added image

Thanks guys!

@ younglion: Yeah, I love ZBrush. I've been playing around with it allot. I'll post some of my ZDoodles (when I get a bit better.) I'll probably post them a ZBCentral as well.

@mmmm_soup: Cheers! Your car is coming along nicely!

@Rhetoric Camel: Thanks! Organic modeling (particularly the face beings it's so complex) is pretty hard to get down. I still haven't. I was saying in another thread that I was thinking about making some video tutorials (not that I'm qualified) but allot of people have asked me to. So I was thinking about it... Maybe I will. I just want to get good enough first.

@Joopson: Thanks! Yeah I have a bunch of human head/body refs. Plus tons of links to sites where you can get free head refs. If you like, you can give me your email, and I'll send you some stuff.

@arran: You are probably right about the expression. I was modeling this with no plans of animating them, so this isn't an issue for me. Though I was watching a DVD by Jeff Unay, 'Hyper realistic character modeling', and he says that it's best to model your characters at an Extreme pose, this ensures that your Geo will be constructed with all the edge loops it need to hold it's shape. Obviously my models not in any 'extreme' pose, but it made sense to me.

anyway, thanks again!
