pivot point madness

hi there
im from the c4d/lw background and am experiencing a real madness. i just cant understand how maya's pivot point works. somewhat i cant control it as i would like to.
it's killing me... can anyone point me to some good source? im on the PLE version right now.
just landed a new job and have to learn maya... everything is cool... besides this pivot point! ARGH!!!
