Whats the rule on copy and paste?

Seems like even though I hide the layers if I hit copy(cntl+c) or paste(cntl+p) my layers get all screwed up.......

In Lightwave you can copy and paste things to differant layers.
Now so far in Maya it seems like this isnt possible....I'll try to copy some geometry and it doesnt work.....fine......but then I turn around and all my objects are in the same layer and I have to seperate them again.....

Whats the general rule about this?
Just avoid copy, cut and paste at all times or what?

Thanks guys!

when you copy and paste, the clone will be copied onto the same layer. After copying it, just go add selected to layer. That should work. I never seem to have any problems with cloning.
