Urgent batch rendering question

I am batch rendering a ring that is rotatin around a logo. SO that I can composit it afterwards.
Now I am doing render layer pass.
So the logo is in one layer and the ring is in another.

I just looked at the rendered result and ALL/COMPLETE ring is being rendered even the part that is hidden behind the logo. Is this normal????
I was thinking it will only render what the camera sees of the ring ie the part of ring that is not hidden behind the logo. Enlighten me please.
How can I render it so that the part of the ring behind the logo does not get rendered.

No one???
I will try under Renderable object>render active instead od render all. I think it might be what I need to do. Let me try.

Are you mixing the display and render layers by any chance?

hmm still no solution.
K brown thanks for the reply.
No I am not mixing them.
In the render layers I have 2 layers.
The "ring" layer contains the ring.
The "logo" layer contains the logo.
In the display layer I have one layer with everything together.

In the animation when the ring rotates around the logo. The front part of the ring is in front of the logo. The back part of the ring is hidden as it is behind the logo.
Now when I render the layers seperately. I correctly get the ring tiffs in one folder and logo tiffs in another folder.

The only problem is that the rings are complete the whole ring like alphabet O.
SO if I composite the ring with the logo it looks like the logo is behind the whole O ring instead of behind only the front part of the ring (U).
grrrr I hope you understand what I am saying here :-(

do you use the "use background" shader on the object you want to obscure the ring with?

Just to make sure that there is nothing wrong with my complicated animation. I made a new file containing just a simple cylinder and put a torus around it.

I rendered them in seperate layers and the whole ring gets rendered even the part that is hidden behing the cylinder. Looks like this is normal. I will have to mask it out in a compositing application. Grrrr.

I see it is working when i do a normal render. It blocks the part where the ring goes. Excellent.
Although when I do a batch render it makes the whole object black. hmmm atleast I am going in the right direction. Let me experiment birt more.

The alpha should be alright. You'll have to comp as usual though.

Make sure the object with Use Background on it is in the right render layer.
