How does a reverse foot rig work?

I have now learned how to set up reverse foot lock rigs. The results are great, the foot is easily animated using a control curve, but I am having a mental block in understanding how it works.

If any of the more experienced riggers/animators among us could give me a few lines of explanation I would be very grateful.

Thanks!

The extra joints drive the originals. Did youuse SDK for attributes on the reverse foot?
