Shatter Effect

I am a novice to animation and recently took a Jr. College class on Maya. Can anyone tell me how to shatter a polygon object. I've done the steps described in the manual. I've added graviety and still nothing happens. Is there a step I'm missing?

maya shatter is terrible, i've never ever got it to work properly. What you could do is use a series of extruded curves and then do a boolean on your object with them (effectively cutting it into pieces) and then aply gravity to the pieces.

That's what I would do.

you could also use cut polygon (if your using poly's)
and as a gravity field to add mass then the plane that the object shatters on could be made resistent
uhm....forgot the name for the tool/process
(not at my PC at the MO....
so ill post you a screen shot with all the tools selected in red
ok?
