shatter effect

I am having a problem creating a shatter effect on a sphere. I am having the sphere bounce off of a surface first, before it hits the floor, so I have the shatter effect keyframed to 'off' up until just before it hits, and then keyframe it 'on' right before. however once I turn it to on, i get this weird transformation, the sphere jumps to a new location at the frame where the shatter takes place, and then continues falling. The tutorial I am following didn't have this problem. However, even when i opened the tutorial support file, and played their animation i got a really weird effect, the shatteredpieces were skipping all over the scree. What is going on?

Never tried working with shatter that way. The easiest thing I guess would be to have two objects, one solid and one that's already shattered and positioned at the point where the sphere hits. You could toggle visibility on them in MAYA or do that in compositiing, and maybe if you want them to be dynamic, animate a field's magnitude.

Mind you its still a lot of tweaking to get Dynamics to work, hehe...
