problems laying a stencil over a textured object

I'm having a small problem following this tutorial, it was written for maya2, and I'm working with v. 6.

https://www.ckk.chalmers.se/tutorials...s/Lesson6.html

I have already assigned a shading group and a material to a planar surface, (used a blinn with granite) what I want to do is lay a stencil of the landing pad on top of this texture and I can't figure how to do that.

The tutorial says I should just be able to click map next to color and assign the file, but since I have a granite texture chosen, when I hit what had been the button to bring up the texture assignment, it takes me to the granite color chooser.

I was trying to do it in the hypershade, but all I was able to do was make the blinn completely transparent, with just the landing pad on it.

Any help would be awesome. Thanks. user added image
