Maya won't render my surface

Whenever I try to render my human, it renders everything like eyes, hair, eyelashes, nails etc besides the body skin. I tried reseting the settings and different types of render but still nothing. The surface that won't render is a smoothed polygon (1 division I think). Also if I try to convert it to subdiv it won't do anything at all, no matter the settings. After I click convert it just.. does nothing. Any ideas please?

Silly question but have you tried putting a standard Lambert material on it? just to check it's not the material giving you problems.
