Animation to Pod File

Hi, I'm still a bit new to this so sorry if this is a noob-ish question.

I have a animated rig that works correctly in maya. When I export to pod format, the animation does not work. The part that seems to messing it up is that the rig is animating one whole mesh. Once I seperate the mesh to seperate pieces (for example: arm, legs, ects), then parent the bone to the mesh instead of binding the root bone to the mesh, the animation works correctly in pod format.

I'm a little confused as to why it won't work and I couldn't find much information about it online.
