Sounds like mental ray is not loaded.

In Maya go to the Windows Menu then Settings/Preferences then Plugin-In Manager then tick Mayatomr.mll.

This will load up mental ray and load all of it's shaders.

Hope it helps

Thank you. Is there a way I can make sure mental ray stays when I load it?

you have to mark auto load in the Plugin Manager.
But sometimes it disappears.
