New Computer - What

Hi all!

I am going to get myself a new computer (winXP). What is the best / do i need for nice maya-ing ?

ram?
graphic?
processor?

As graphic card i heard about the "NVIDIA Quadro4 980 XGL" - is it good? how expensive is it?

Thank you!

You will have to work the streets with my Avtar to make that kind of money :-) Kidding

Ram- 1GB+
VGA- If you have no money get a GForceTi4800 128Mb card. Or beg.
Otherwise Quadro 750 is good as well. Offcource you could get the 980 as well if you work for me :-) Or the new Quadro FX something.
CPU get dual AMD or Intel 3GHZ with hyperthreading.....

Damit go Nvidia web site and do some research. What is budget? Are you a beginner or a MASTER like me :-)

the nvidia card - how much is it ? more than a 1000 ? in couldn´t find it at any reseller here anyway ... so ..

so, i gotta look ... cause i really want a dual-monitor thing and so on ... hopefully i can get something not-to-expensive user added image

The card I told you the GeForce 4800 128Mb does dual display without any problems. I am slightly above beginner stage....approaching intermediate in 10 years....no soon :-)
This card meets my needs so far. It is VERY cheap due tu ultra/fx all those cards coming out. When you have more money after working for me you can always upgrade.

1024MB RAM
Radeon 9600+
Athlon 3000+

why stop there?
up the ram to 3Gb
An you should have bought a radeon 9800ProAllinWonder. Or even better a quadro FX5900 Ultra
Oh, yeah, the motherboard a Nvidia Nforce3 with double AMD 3000 Opteron (you know, having a 64 bits processor instead of 32 is cool even if no program can still take advantage of it).
Dont foget to mod the case into a piramid and adding watercooling so you can overclock it even more...
and if wou have space in your mansion spare a room for a Beowulf cluster to send the renders....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think ill buy a Deep Blue or a Cray with my pocket money...user added image

dont waste you money on something you dont need right need, get a mid of the range pc untill you are enough advanced to apreciate the extra vroom.

other wise you will spend a fortune and not use you pc to its full advantage

get something like an

amd 1.8
512 ddr ram
40 gig hd
and spend NO more then £100 on a vid card: geforce mx type maybe.

i agree with kevin - wow, never thought i wud say that user added image

theres absolutely no point in spending so much money on a highend machine if ur new to graphics/3d
you wont be able to fully appreciate the hardware, especially the vid card i.e. quadroFX + maya 5 = very nice realtime hardware rendering

dual AMD athlon 2600+
2 gig of RAM
2 80 GB hard drives set up with raid
Matrox Parhelia (not heard of but is good)

and the rest sound etc..

Parhelia 256MB DDR AGP, at around £424 GBP ($685 USD) id say it was pretty high end.

I would say it's waste of money for a card that is not too good for 3d:-) Compared to ATI or Nvidia.

it is:
CPU - 2,6 P4 with HyperThreating

nVidia GeForce FX-5600
1280 MB Ram (1 x 256 + 2 x 512)

120 GB HDD
