I's rendered using Mental Ray, no GI, just final gathering with some planes emitting light that as you can see in the reflections.

hehe... How can you get it?? you already have it... no custom shaders at all. Just take a blinn material, set it to white, take another, set it to black and render that sing Mental Ray with the default reflectivity.
As a matter of fact is one of my simplest models, just primitives and simple materials.

i dont have mental ray. i dont think you can get it for maya 4.. but i didnt know blins had that much relectivity.

the type of material only determines the specular highlights and other things, the reflectivity can be the same for any of them. user added image

Oh ,and yes, you can have mental ray for maya 4. although is not that simple to use as it is in 5.
