Walt Disney Animation Studios have released a new version of its legendary data set for Motunui Island from 2016 animated feature Moana in USD format. The file contains everything necessary to render a version of the island. The scene is specifically chosen to represent some of the typical challenges currently encountered in a production environment. It includes large amounts of geometry created through instancing as well as complex volumetric light transport.
Although many of the challenges that creep up during production rendering, such as motion blur and a large number of light sources, are not represented in the scene, Disney hopes that it will still be useful for developing, testing, and benchmarking new rendering algorithms.
