YouTuber Shamook got millions of views on his deepfake video of Luke Skywalker’s cameo during the second season finale of The Mandalorian. Many considered it better than the original and it landed Shamook with a job at Lucasfilm. ILM is always on the lookout for talented artists and has in recent years invested in both machine learning and AI as a means to produce compelling visual effects.

The season finale ends with Luke showing up just in time to save Din Djarin and his allies. While the character was played on set by Mark Lloyd-Jones, his voice and face were replaced with digitally de-aged versions of Mark Hamill’s during post-production. Luke’s cameo was met with different reactions and the backlash led Shamook to create his deepfake, which he completed in just four days.
