Export, import smooth bind maps ...

I have a problem with exporting bind maps from a character. I ussually bind geometry to skeleton, paint skin weights and then I want to export these bind maps(from menu, not using script from versions precedeing Maya 4.0). All I know that Maya generates bitmap for each joint and it is necessary to choose a chanel, but when I perform this function, software saves bitmaps only in black, white or grey colour. Not with black and white variation depending on weights of CV's related to joints. Thanks for your help ...
