Straight Lines with Curves

I am trying to make a "U" shape using curves... Like an old army cot. However I can't seem to get a straight line. I tried linear, but as I rebuilt the curve to add more curves, it distorts it. How can I make my lines straight?

I am using Maya 2014 and I am a n00b...

If I understand right you are not satisfied with the bending of the pipe at the lower part.
Did you try to move the control vertices (RMB on the curve to open the menu) of the curve more to the bends? Between bottom and start of the curve you should need only two or three vertices and all others are building the curve.
You might also be able to pull the curve vertices in that way to straighten the curve on the downside

How did you turn on the numbers on the grid?

Display>Grid>Options. Down at the bottom of that screen are the options to turn on grid numbers.
