View port gets gray

Sometimes when I've zoomed in and out much i a view port for example the top view. Why does it all sudden gets gray? Even tho I hit both "a" and "f" to fit the view port.

The only way I've been able to solve this is to create a new top view.
Is there any other solution?
Please Help!

First, make sure your camera's clipping range is high enough.

the clipping plane is how far the camera can see basically, so it will not show anything past the far clipping plane or anything closer than the near clipping plane , without these the camera would have infinite field of vision and would probably take ages to render from since it would have to calculate forever more or less.

jsprogg: I never thought about the clipping distance having an effect on render times. I'll have to test it out.

Perfecto, i'm not sure how much the clipping plane affect render times but what I do know is that although the clipping planes are imaginary Maya uses them to calculate depth information so obviously the larger the distance between the planes the more calculating it would have to do.
Be aware that Auto render clipping planes is on by default when you use the Software renderer and only works with that, if you want to use say the Hardware renderer or Mental Ray then Maya uses the values that you have manually set or are there by default on the near and far clipping planes.
